Bulletproof® Brain Octane is the most highly distilled version of coconut oil. Coconut oil contains Medium-Chain Triglycerides of various lengths, measured in the amount of carbon atoms in the molecule: C6, C8, C10 and C12.
It is the C6, C8 and C10 that actually create the ketosis effects, and of those three, C8 is the one that creates ketosis most powerfully and with the least “gastrointestinal distress” (i.e. lovingly called “disaster pants” in the community). So simply put, Bulletproof® Brain Octane is the best to use.
Usage and amount
Add Brain Octane to your Bulletproof® coffee.
Start with a teaspoon and work your way up to a tablespoon slowly (about a teaspoon increase per 1-2 weeks). Back off on the amount when you get “disaster pants”, and increase slowly. “Disaster pants” come up quickly (±15-45 minutes for me), so the feedback is nice and quick ;-).
As it is clear, tasteless and odorless, you can add Brain Octane to pretty much any food or drink. I put it on sushi, making it taste better and I feel more satieted (Dave later put out a short movie also promoting this).
Where to get Brain Octane?
I get Brain Octane from Helfi.nl in Europe.
In the US you’re best off getting it via Amazon or directly from Bulletproof Inc.
I haven’t seen it yet at stores myself, but I’m told it is going to be available at WholeFoods in the US.
Downgrading alternatives?
If you can’t get Brain Octane, this is the order in which I advise downgrading to alternatives, from best to worst:
- Brain Octane: most powerful, least disruptive, odorless and tasteless thin oil,
- Bulletproof® XCT Oil: powerful, less disruptive, odorless and tasteless thin oil,
- any other MCT oil: may lead to more distress and less effect, as they’ll typically have a lot of C12 (chemically classified as MCT, but doesn’t convert to ketones) and C6, both also being irritants to your gut and leading to “disaster pants”,
- good source coconut oil: coconut flavour and smell, lowest amount of MCTs, does have some caprylic acid that is good for your body, use for the flavour and taste.
